Substrates such as particleboard, fiberboard, PVC edge bands and wood veneers feature distinct surface properties. Accurate selection of hot melt adhesives is essential to achieve optimal bonding performance.
Wood-based panels including particleboard, medium-density fiberboard and wheat straw board have high porosity. Hot melt adhesives with excellent wetting capacity and high initial adhesion are recommended. EVA hot melt adhesives apply to common wood panel edge banding; PUR hot melt adhesives suit panels used in humid environments or scenarios with strict environmental standards; formaldehyde-free polyurethane hot melt adhesives are specially developed for formaldehyde-free boards like wheat straw panels.
PVC edge bands have smooth surfaces and some contain plasticizers. Adhesives with strong compatibility with PVC and effective anti-plasticizer migration performance are required, such as medium-temperature EVA hot melt adhesives and dedicated PVC edge banding adhesives. Uniform glue coating on the back of edge bands is also necessary.
Wood veneer edge bands are prone to moisture absorption and poor heat resistance. Low-temperature adhesives with operating temperature ranging from 140℃ to 160℃ shall be adopted to prevent veneer scorching. Products with moderate open time guarantee sufficient pressing bonding.
Melamine edge bands boast high surface hardness and poor wetting performance. Hot melt adhesives with high initial adhesion and favorable fluidity enable deep penetration into substrate pores for stable bonding.
Substrate moisture content shall be controlled within the ideal range of 8% to 12%. Excessively high or low moisture content impairs adhesive wetting effect and bonding strength. Pre-drying or humidity conditioning treatment is required in advance.
